THH X MONSTER HUA HUA WORKSHOP IN LIJIANG, CHINA – COURTYARD STUDIES

COURTYARD STUDIES

LIJIANG, YUNNAN, CHINA, 16—18 JUNE 2025

This summer, we return to China with our friends at Monster Hua Hua (@怪兽花花大当家 on Xiao Hong Shu / @monsterhuahua_events) and Luly Event for our second workshop together — this time, in the ancient town of Lijiang.

Titled Courtyard Studies — or simply — this three-day workshop invites participants to consider the courtyard not just as an architectural element, but as a symbolic and functional space: open yet enclosed, shared yet intimate — a place where life gathers and ideas take root.

In Chinese architecture, the courtyard is the heart of the home, the anchor of the building. In this workshop, it becomes our classroom, our laboratory, our collaborator. Together, we’ll explore not theory, but material, gesture, and meaning.

Through individual and collaborative exercises, participants will engage with floral and spatial design across a range of scales and themes. The programme includes topical mini-lectures, demonstrations, a field trip, and hands-on sessions — all designed to shift perspectives and open new ways of seeing and making. Sessions are conducted in English, with Mandarin Chinese translation.

We’ll be working with an abundance of locally and regionally sourced plant material, drawing from Yunnan’s extraordinary botanical wealth. Many of the world’s most prized ornamental species — including roses, azaleas, rhododendrons, peonies, and magnolias — trace their origins to this region. These materials are not just beautiful; they carry the richness of a place long revered for its flora.

This is not a conventional floral design course. It is an open-ended study of space, nature, and self — guided by intuition, shaped by place, and held within the architecture of the courtyard.
